About the Artist

Virginia Chamlee Cooper, Artist
Country at Heart
Born in Eureka, California, my early years (age 2 to 5) were spent in the country. From the age of six on, I lived in Santa Barbara until getting married and moving to Thousand Oaks, California. Our family homes included a stone and log cabin at Paradise Camp, a rental home on a sheep ranch in Ukiah, California and a house in old Thousand Oaks in the 1960s where cattle and sheep were herded through the city intersections and western movies were filmed.
I discovered my affinity for art in grammar school and pursued any art class that was available in the public school system. As an adult, I took extension classes at Santa Barbara City College, University of California at Santa Barbara and from private instructors. I also attended workshops and classes at Cal Art Institute in Thousand Oaks, California, Scottsdale Artists School in Arizona and Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. My time in Europe instilled in me a desire to learn the techniques of the Old Masters so I studied Carravagio, Lord Leighton and Bouguereau.
After our three children were grown, we resettled in Prescott, Arizona where I had access to the true old west with antiques and re-enactors to inspire a new genre. Still loving the romantic style I had learned in Italy, I sought to combine that genteel era with the wild and exciting western stories of the Arizona Territory. I am merging those two genres in an effort to create something new and different.
